The base, instead of unleashing chemicals or machinery on the invasive weeds, has turned to the indiscriminate eaters. Fenced in a half-acre hillside plot, 60 goats have been devouring the yellow-flowered invaders from southern Europe since last Monday. Dunakin, whose burgeoning herd now numbers 114, ventured off the island 1 1/2 years ago and the business took off. She has rented the goats to the University of Washington, ports of Tacoma and Everett, school districts and private homes. |
